Tammy Terrell – 2 Movies for the price of One star?......
There is a saying in life that goes like this.
When you’re waiting for a bus, and you want them to come as soon as possible. Generally one never appears. However, when you least expect them to arrive. Then low and behold they arrive promptly usually in “twos”.
Using this same logic it appears that the former Motown star that is Tammy Terrell (Born - Thomasina Winifred Montgomery; April 29, 1945), We are now going to be exposed to 2 x new movies about her life. Two are coming out to us for the year of 2016, after waiting years for just one movie to be shown about her life.
Tammy Terrell, died on the 16th of March 1970. She was known for her duets and chart hits mainly with Marvin Gaye during the latter part of her career.
Tammy Terrell was only 24 years old at the time of her death, but she already had more than 10 years of show-business experience behind her.
By the age of 13 years old in fact, she was already working within the business under her given name, Tammy Montgomery. She appeared as an opening act in the city of Philadelphia, USA for the likes of Gary “U.S.” Bonds and Patti Labelle & the Bluebelles.
She had a record deal but no hit records – yet at 16 years old! She then joined James Brown’s live revue as a backup singer at the age of 18 years old.
In 1965, at the age of 20, she was signed to Motown Records but had only moderate success with her initial solo recordings.
Then, in early 1967, Motown decided to pair her with Marvin Gaye, who had several top-10 hits to his credit at that point but was by no means a major star at the time.
Together (Tammy and Marvin) working with Motown’s newest songwriters, the husband-and-wife team of Nickolas Ashford and Valerie Simpson, Marvin, and Terrell became a sensation.
After “Ain’t No Mountain High Enough” came five more Ashford & Simpson singles, three of them major R&B hits: "Your Precious Love,” “Ain’t Nothing Like the Real Thing”, “You’re All I Need to Get By"
My favorite of all the classic hits that they had together was this one - “You’re All I Need to Get By" released in the year 1968. Please listen to the original single release below
Written by the real-life couple that is Ashford & Simpson, this single became one of the few Motown recordings of the 1960s that was not recorded with the familiar "Motown sound".
Instead, "You're All I Need to Get By" had a more soulful and gospel-oriented theme surrounding it, which was influenced by the writers, who also sang background vocals on the recording, sharing vocals in a church choir in New York.
The lead vocals were recorded separately by the two singers and combined during the mixing process, reportedly to cut studio time and give time for Terrell, who was using a wheelchair, to recover from surgery to repair the malignant brain tumor that would ultimately cause her death in 1970.
Marvin Gaye and Tammy Terrell - You All I Need to Get By - 1968
The hit title track - “You’re All I Need to Get By.” was later revived 25 years later as a duet between rapper Method Man and hip-hop soul singer Mary J Blige.
Their rendition, titled "I'll Be There for You/You're All I Need," won Method Man and Mary J Blige a Grammy Award for Best Rap Vocal Performance by a Duo or Group in 1995 for instance.
